saying goodbye

Here are the fearsome four plus their mama, Agnes.  Blanche, Oscar, Bennett and Ruth are standing together in this early 1960's picture.  They are all gone now.  I got the message this morning that Uncle Oscar had left us.  Aunt Ruth passed away a month ago, just before Christmas and Aunt Blanche passed away at Christmas the year before.  My father, Bennett, was the oldest of all the children in the family and he was the first of that generation to leave us.  I really miss them all.  I think that I mostly miss being a part of a larger extended family that included many generations.  I didn't ask as many questions of my grandparents as I should have.  I didn't get to know what they did as kids or how they lived in rural Minnesota.  I did ask my aunts and uncles some of those questions. I think it is important to pass on those stories.  Now it is up to me and my siblings to pass on those stories and the stories we wrote as we grew up and then had children of our own.  I am a member of the oldest generation in my family now.  I don't know if I like it.  But, I have to accept it.
