me, Bergen, 2004

I don't know what it is about Bergen that I like so much but I truly think it calls to me in my soul.  Bergen sits on the western coast of Norway and faces the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean called the Norwegian Sea.  The strip of land that it sits on is relatively narrow and rises from sea level to a rugged mountain range rather quickly.  The old town down by the harbor is a great place to walk.  The streets are curvy.  The fish market is always busy.  The Bryggen (the historic wharf) is a fun place to hang out.  There is a shopping center (or a mall, if you'd rather) tucked away in a renovated block of older buildings that were gutted and re-configured to make way for the individual stores.  This is right on the main downtown street and the center blends in beautifully with the other older buildings on the street. The Cathedral sits on a hill at the end of this street and anchors everything from it's prominent perch.  I don't know if it is the fresh sea air or the mountain trails or just the casual walkability of the city, but there is something there that stirs my heart.
